Our great-grandmother was an amazing woman. And here, one hundred years later, we have her diary.
Take a trip to the past through the eyes of a teen-age girl, and marvel at how the world has changed -
and the many ways it has not.

July 7, 1912 - Sunday

7 Went to breakfast quite early and finished “G. of the L.” Dan is not home yet from the seashore and Don was not at breakfast. Muz is housecleaning.  Went to Buelah’s but not much doing. Afraid I made Mary sick, swinging her by the feet.

Marjorie mentions two Dons - one is a boy who lives at her boarding house, a 'annoying-brother' type of relationship, the other is a boy she has a crush on.

July 6, 1912 - Saturday

6 Loafed at Mahoney’s all morning and at Buelah’s all afternoon. Read “Girl of the Limberlost” Fine story. Had a visit from Sarah and Marion Miel just at supper time and they stayed till 6:40, so I had my supper in solitary grandeur.

July 5, 1912 - Friday

5 Was too lazy to go to breakfast so ate pretzels and peanut butter instead and two ice cream cones. Got Mrs. Dibble to sew up my new dresses and they had not been turned up so all the good it did was to add an extra row of stitches. Bought Don’s tennis ball. I need one anyway and it was new. Sat for awhile on the porch with him. He was awfully nice but I’m afraid I bored him rather. Buelah saw me with him. She’ll tell Irene. I don’t care. I’m rather glad if anything.

July 4, 1912 - Thursday

4 Ah! The glorious fourth. Woke about 6:30 A.M. because of a fire-cracker serenade performed under my window. Went to breakfast (after dressing) and met Don with another boy in route to the river. Went myself but did not see him. Went in swimming after lunch and tore a great hole in my new suit. Came home in canoe after supper, and went rest of way in trolley. I was squeezed against an awful pig of a woman.

No, Gwendolyn, he is not warming his hands; he is trying to hypnotize the fire.

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF G.A.H.A. MAHONEY, DECEASED.

P.S. Gus is still missing.

July 3, 1912 - Wednesday

3 Don was going to the theatre and Dan down town in the evening so I went to Beulah’s to exhibit my red blazer which I had bought this morning.

July 2, 1912 - Tuesday

2 Did just about nothing all day. Saw Don in evening. Missed a trolley ride to Lizzy Park with Muz just to stay with him. We sat under the trees with Dan. Don seems to be getting to like me better (in a certain way) but it may be only my imagination.

July 1, 1912 - Monday

1 Got up too late for breakfast. Ate instead a ten cent bar of milk chocolate, nearly a whole box of Uneedas and two peaches.  Loafed. Went to Harriet’s. She is going on the 10:45 train tonight to Bar Habor. Saw Don. Am getting worse all the time about him.

Uneedas Biscuits - Created in 1899 by the National Biscuit Company - a name which would be later shortened to Nabisco.
