Our great-grandmother was an amazing woman. And here, one hundred years later, we have her diary.
Take a trip to the past through the eyes of a teen-age girl, and marvel at how the world has changed -
and the many ways it has not.

4 - Knew my history. Went with Harriet and raided the Trumbell's apple barrel. Carl came out and played with us.

3 - Did not know my history very well to-day, but got my other lessons all right. Got to breakfast too late for wheat-cakes. "Oh! Death, where is thy sting."
Loafed around all morning and read part of "The Filigree Ball" which I hooked out of Miss C's. room. I'm really getting very wicked! Teased Dan after supper till he got mad. He tried to write up his diary, but didn't succeed very well. Raced all over the house with Muriel Duffus.

2 - Had all my holiday lessons so got along all right at school. Am nervous about tomorrow, though, as I don't know my history. Saw Miss Berry after school and, with Harriet, walked part of the way home with her. Brought Muz her supper. It rained like fury.

November 30, 1912 - Saturday
30 - Was the B.P. mentioned above. Went to Art Class in the morning. Mr. Logan was very nice to me this morning and said my drawing was fine. I guess my extra early arrival put him in a good humor. Went to the doctor's (Dr. Storr) and found out that my blood percentage has increased . Shampooed my poor hair at last. Stayed over at Mrs. Mahoney's after supper and read. Came home at nine o'clock.

29 - Got to breakfast rather late. Stayed at Mrs. Mahoney's all morning and most of the afternoon and read. Went home at 3 and tried to shampoo my hair but - no hot water. Wrote this up, at a lot of "Uneedas" and let Baby (Chriss) out. I expect to be a pretty busy person to-morrow.

November 28, 1912 - Thursday
(28) - Slept till about nine o'clock. Ate a little breakfast, but not much; I'm saving up for dinner. Loafed around with Dan most of the morning and read. Went home at twelve, got dressed, and then went back to Mrs. Mahoneys. Had lots of roast duck and, when I got so I couldn't bend, I went back into the parlor and read some more. at about five we went into the pantry and hooked some cake, a turkey leg, and some bread which we toasted. We ate and ate till we looked like turkeys ourselves, I guess. I looked more like a lobster or an overripe tomato, as I got my face toasted a good deal
It snowed nearly all day and the ground is covered half an inch deep. I love a snowy Thanksgiving.

November 27, 1912 - Wednesday
27 - Got up rather late and landed at breakfast at about 95. Wore my plaid dress and, as Dan has never seen it before, he had lots of remarks to make on te subject, and more than got even for anything I've ever said about his ties. After breakfast, I colored some of my daffydils in this book, and wrote up part of yesterday and part of to-day, so that much is done. Went home right after dinner and drew some Thanksgiving cards to send to Harriet, Milly, and Dan. Muz felt tired to-night, so she went home after supper. I feel just a little blue my self, but it will wear off, no doubt, before long.
I wish Dan would quit making would-be witty remarks at my expense. If course, I do the same to him sometimes, but goodness only knows he resents it enough when I do. I got quite a writing-up in his diary last time, so feel no compunction about resenting his remarks. They may be funny, but my sense of humor, like that of most people, is not very keen where I am concerned. May Staehlr has gone away over Thanksgiving. I'm awfully sorry, as I like her very much. I'd like her even more if Dan hadn't told her a synopsis of my dairy, but of course that's not her fault.

26. Went to Harriet's in the morning and played with the dogs, did my lessons and devoured some of the pop-corn balls that Carl Trumbull brought up to Harriet. Mr. George spoke again in High School to-day and his speech was an entirely different one. Got all my over-vacation lessons, except my history and a few Algebra examples, done before school ended. Vacation lasts from 5 to-day till 115 monday. May Stachele has to go to school to-morrow, though, as vacation really begins from noon tomorrow and she goes in the morning. For the first time I am glad that I go in the morning afternoon.
Dan is in here interrupting my train of thought by such remarks as "it's so seldom that you have a train of thought, that it's a pity to derail it," etc. My diary was here all day but I hid it and also got Dan to promise that he wouldn't read it if he did find it. Mrs. Thompson brought back my plaid dress which she had been altering and I tried it on again. It fits pretty well now. I went to bed rather late after scrubbing my handsome (?) mug and cold-creaming it. I can't get used to the fact that I really have a vacation of several days.

25 - Had no history to-day so did my English in my free period. Harriet did not get back from New York until after two o'clock so she missed Latin. Lucky che-ild! She invited me to supper with her. Afterwards, Milly Daniels came over and we all went up with Muz (who also came over to Harriet's) to Trinity parish-house to hear Mr. George, of the George Junior Republic, give a speech. Got home about ten.
November 24, 1912 - Sunday
24 - Stayed at Mrs. Mahoney's all morning and afternoon till 5 o'clock. May and Dan had lots of fun with my diary. I could tell May a few things about Dan's if I wanted and some spicy quotations therefrom might amuse her. He told her just about everything he'd read in mine. He pretended he wanted a drink and asked her if she didn't. When they got out to the ice water tank he let out just about everything he knew I guess, as May seemed to be exceptionally well informed when they returned. Had supper at home. It rained like fury all afternoon so I didn't go to Sunday school.
November 23, 1912 - Saturday
23 - Went to Art Class this morning and drew a head of Venus; but, when it was finished, it looked more like Medusa or one of the Furies. Mr. Logan said it did not "look finished." He is a bright man. It wasn't. Went to the Hartford with Edna and Mabel Mahoney. Mrs. Mahoney treated us to that and hot chocolate and candy. Dan went to dancing school as usual. Wonder if the P.O.'s power will revive. I shouldn't wonder. Harvard won the Yale-Harvard game, 20-0. Dan will probably rub it in to Mr. Dunbar, a Yale graduate. Vallette Wright and Eunice Davis came to see May Staehle and waited here for some time, but May did not come so they left at about 8.
November 22, 1912 - Friday
22 - We had a Harvard professor here to-day who gave us a lecture on the merits of his college. He fully persuaded me, and I shall give Harvard the preference if I ever go to college. He had the queerest way of curving his knees in, when he talked, and he was bald except for a solitary little horn of brown hair. Also, what he lacked in chin, he more than made up in nose. However, he was a true genius. He found several things to say in favor of Harvard. We had an algebra test to-day. I have probably got it all wrong as I don't know how to reduce the examples to lowest terms.
November 21, 1912 - Thursday
21 - Went to Harriet's for lunch. She is going to get out of school early and go to New York. Got a good mark in history to-day. Shall sit in the seat that Hasty so cruelly despoiled me of, while Harriet is gone as it was because we wrote notes that Hasty moved me. When I got to supper, Dan was engaged in the great National pastime of tease the Mabel. He seemed to be winning.

19. Haven't had time to write up in an age. Neither have I had material. Am pretty much all right again and am still enjoying (?) the happy "school days" that, as everyone will tell you, come but once in our lives. Alas! and we can't ever have them again (Boo hoo) and we'd give ten years of our life to be a school-girl once more, with naught to worry or trouble us, etc., etc. It's my opinion that anyone that thinks they'd like the care-free (?), happy (??), irresponsible (???) life of them's 'ittle bygone school days had better try the Hartford High. They will never say it again. But, enough! Me mighty brain, though showing the strain, still holds traces of other thoughts. I had lunch at Harriet's today. Am taking iron pills to give me more blood. Blood! I will have blood! Muz generally meets me half-way to school and pops an iron pill into my mouth. Dan has had a crush on a girl who is, according to him "a pink fairy". It took a rather violent form but was very short. I think he's getting stuck on May S. but am not sure. If he does it will probably be a long one as she is not flashy, but just quiet and ladylike. I am not aiming digs at the P.F! (Dan says not it stands for "poor fool") in these words. As far as I can gather she was not flashy. She was (and probably is) the original human ice burg.

6-12. Wilson was elected President and a parade paraded with red lights and noise. I stayed in bed from Wednesday, just after school till Friday noon. I got up Friday and went to school, got a sick-pass and came out again. I did not go to Art class on Saturday either but Muz telephoned to Mr. Logan so it's all right. Went to Sunday school, Went to school Monday and Tuesday but feel wobbly and am tired telling everyone so in answer to inquiries after my health.

November 5, 1912 - Tuesday
1-5. Nothing much doing. My Algebra is being hoisted up more or less (principally the latter). A fat boy sat on Dan's foot suddenly and violently and Dan is in consequence an I.I. (Interesting Invalid, Ignorant Imbecile, or Illiterate Ignoramus). Went to Donald's house to get "Two Little Savages" for Dan who wanted to write a theme based on some information contained therein. Of course, Donald is always absent at that time of the day but Mrs. P. wasn't there either so Dan did not get it till the evening. (Nov. 4) Donald brought it to him, as he (Dan) told me afterward. Harriet and I walk home with the Latin teacher, Miss Berry, almost every night lately and get lots of pointers on the daily life and habits of the teacher when that beast is in captivity. Miss Berry has all sorts of linguistic accomplishments as well as a pronounced sense of humor. As to the latter, my attempts at Latin would develop a sense of humor in the most seriously inclined. Had dinner at Harriet's Nov. 4. They were entertaining twelve little deaf and dumb children and I helped them. Harriet had out a toy theatre that she'd had when she was a youngster and we gave a play in it with some little pasteboard figures. Have had indigestion since Sunday night.

A Short Synopsis of
October
Started Sunday school again for this year. I have the same teacher as last year, Miss Downs. Oct. 13.
We got our preliminary reports in High School. Oct.
Muzzy took me to see "Oliver Twist," played by the All-star cast, at Parson's. Marie Daro was "Oliver." Dandy play.
I think Chrissy is moulting.
Did not go anywhere on Hallowe'en.
Saw Donald once, at Mrs. Mahoney's. He says he will be invisible for about two months now.
P.S. He kept his word.

September 29, 1912 - Sunday
29. Went for a ride in Dr. Cook's automobile. We rode for about 4 hours, from 8.30 to 12.30. Went to Mrs. Mahoney's in the evening and Agnes Ahern (according to Dan, "a witch") was here. Donald has heard so much about her from Dan and me that he says he wants to meet her and told Dan to telephone him next time she came, but Donald didn't. It would not have done very much good anyhow, as she is about three years his senior, and had two admirers with her as it was. She generally has two or more along whenever she comes here.
I sent this book over at Mrs. Mahoney's but sent it home with Muz after supper as I'd hate to have anyone read it. Took Dan's diary and got him so raving mad that he could hardly see straight. It's queer how Dan and I both like to take diaries and hate so to have ours taken, but 'tis ever thusly!
Miss Hastings asked me if I would write for the Chronicle. I surely will if I can think up a subject.

22. Brought "Jimmy" some coffee for breakfast this morning as she did not wake till 1030. Brought this book to Mrs. Mahoney's and wrote it up under difficulties. Dan saw some of it but not the best part. We (Muz, Jimmy and I) went to the Cooks' for dinner and for a lovely auto-ride afterwards. Telephoned to Don (or tried to) before I went to supper but evidently he and his mother were at church as, according to central, "They didn't (or rather "don't") answer."
By the way, I met Mrs. Sage to-day and I must go to see her and "Blink". He (Blink) is the dearest kiddie! Robert is his real name but I used to call him Bob, then Bobolink and then shortened that to Blink. He is about six years old.
Did my homework at Mrs. Mahoney's to-night.
It is clear that the pasted note was added some time after this page was written. The date is from the next month and if you look closely at the top, you can see that the next line had writing.

I will try my best to see under the paper, but I do not wish to damage the diary by attempting to remove it. Seeing through the page in strong sunlight allows me to only read a bit - "In the" so far! But reading cursive backwards, through text and a 'forward page' of cursive has thus far been too much for me.

19. Haven't had time to write for an age. High School is a strenuous proposition. Why! I actually have to study. It's outrageous. Don drifted into Mahoney's this evening and I was glad I'd put on my white dress as I'd hate to have him see me looking as I usually do, i.e. like an abandoned pig. He seemed to be in a very good humor but I couldn't say the same of Dan. I think he's still mad at Don. We loafed around for some time and then I announced my firm determination to sail for home, and went, escorted by the Ds probably as a sort of Thanksgiving offering at getting rid of me.

11. Started in school to-day. Called for Harriet and Mildred at one o'clock and we went down together to High School. We got schedules of our teachers, their rooms, and subjects but, for all that I had the time of my sweet young life finding them. I have my history with Miss Tayler, who is nice and rather humorous but apt to snap at the least provocation. Miss Benny, my Latin teacher, is also very nice. Miss Wright is my session-room and Algebra teacher and I have my English from Miss Hastings. Harriet is in my Latin and English classes and Dan is also with me in English.

(5). Went to the fair with the Cooks. Saw some very nice things but my head ached and I got awfully tired. Dr. Cook got a fox terrier puppy for Harriet. We ate our supper at a stand on the fair grounds. Katherine and I called on Marion Downs when we got home and had peach ice cream and cake.
Attached card with comments / 'x for wrong or c for correct' by Marjorie in a brighter shade of red:
I was born on aSaturday x Sunday
You are painfully susceptible and continually falling in love. x After much changing you will eventually be satisfied. ? You are thoroughly practical, ? but quick tempered, c and though liking your own way, c are perfectly resigned when you do not get it. There is one severe trouble, brought on by others, in which money is involved, but you will come out all right. ? Financially you are fortunate - you make money ? and enjoy using it, c you are prudent, ? however, and shun danger of all kinds. ?

Socially you are esteemed, ? by all your acquaintances. Your married life will be fraught with many dangers, particularly that in which your reputation is involved, but by using tact and foresight you will eventually overcome all your enemies. At the next new moon you will have cause to rejoice over a most important event. Ha, Ha.
Advice - "Look before you leap." Needless! I am not a frog.
Happiness: A phantom all are seeking few can find. Happy times can be expected. Any one can expect it.
Best Days - Friday x and Saturday. Friday is not, as I hate fish
Fortunate Flower - Violet. Never brought me luck yet.
Lucky Stone - Ruby. I probably shan't ever have one, so that's safe.
Ques: Is 23 my lucky number or age?
At this point Marjorine begins writing a bit more sporadically. The next post will be on September 11, 1912.

26. Loafed at Mahoney's all A. M. and found and read Dan's diary. A mean trick, but he'd do the same for me if he could! Saw some of the pictures of Miss Egan, taken during the summer. Went to the office and had the rest of the salad with Muz. Read "The Red Triangle." Met Don on way from supper. Heard someone say "Consider my hat off " and there was Donald, with an armful of bundles.
"The Red Triangle" was published in 1903, by author Arthur George Morrison. onread.com states that: "The Red Triangle is an amazing book belonging to Arthur George Morrison (1863-1945) who is known as a famous English author and a master of realistic and detective stories. ... The Red Triangle is a mysterious novel which unites the plots of Martin Hewitt: Investigator to a complete story with common plot line. A number of literary critics recognize The Red Triangle to be even better than Sherlock Holmes."

25. Was with Dan all day. We visited the H. J., read the Sunday papers & wrote up our diaries. Tried to read D's but couldn't. Dan says that some boy says the I "have the loveliest lips!" and that my "mouth is my best feature. " I know who said it, and it puffed me up more on account of it's author than itself. Dan and said boy and one other seem to have been discussing me, I hope favorably. Dan pretends to believe that the boy in question knows about my lips by other means than looking at them, but such (alas!) is not the case. Went for two short walks with Dan and on the last, - met Donald on his wheel. Talked to him for a little while and then he went home. His is better looking than ever. Muz was home when I got there, with lot of picnic-stuff. I grafted a soft-shell crab, three helpings of shrimp salad and several devilled eggs. It was so hot during the night that I could not sleep much.

24. Went to Bulah both Am. and P.M. Took a bath and went in the sun with Chriss and read. Dan went to Don's in the evening. Seems to me that, for a boy who is so fond of adoring me to "Let his lordship come to us if he wants to " that he goes to "his Lordship's" house rather often but I suppose it's none of my business. I went to B's. again but did not stay long as she was out. Howard D. is home and brought some poor little squirrels he had shot. Took a very short walk.

23. It rained a little this A.M., a soft, pattering rain with the sun shining through it all the while. I picked a lot of grapes and took them to Bulah. Saw Dan at lunch. After lunch I went to the office. Had 4 o'clock tea with Muz there. Went to supper about 7 o'clock. Muz fell asleep and I had to telephone twice before they woke her up. She got to supper about 8. Went for a short walk with Dan. He stopped in at Donald's to return his racket but I walked on ahead. Dan wanted to walk farther than I did so we parted but he got back ahead of me. I sold him my ball but he cannot pay me the $.25 till next week. I'm awfully glad I got rid of the thing for as much as a quarter.

21. Went to office about 11 A. M. (again, obviously to write letters and (also again) did not do it) and as it rained we had a nice little lunch at the office. It was fine!! I went home with Muz at 5 P. M. Saw Dan at supper and he assured me that he was not "mad"last night and that I had a perfect right to refuse to go out if I chose (I agree with him there, emphatically. I won't be bossed by any fool boy ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ) Harry Atkins is coming back the 28th, I think, Thank the Source of all blessings! I really wish it were sooner, so I do.
Later - Came home at 8 o'clock. Mr. C and his banjo came and Chris was greatly edified by that latter.

20. Got letters from Bunny (May Coye), Dad and Sister Mag. Finished "The Clansman" and cried over parts of it! I certainly am a 1st Class, A1 boob. I've had proof of it before now, too. Went to the office in the Pm>m obviously to write to Sr. M, etc. but did not do so. Dan wanted me to go for a walk but I did not feel "walkative (If one can say "talkative" why not say that?) and told him so, upon which he cast his cap upon the table and strode forth, banging the door (I may be mistaken in this as the screen-door bangs anyhow) I went home about 5 min. later. and had a late supper with Mr. C and Muz.

19. Loafed all A.M., paid a call to the Happy Family (N*****'s) and read part of "The Clansman." Washed my hair down at the office in the afternoon and met Dan at 4 o'clock at the Travellers'. We went to the Morgan Memorial and went all through it. Had good time but was perfectly dead-tired afterwards and pretty irritable. Had lots of fun with D. in the evening. Muz massaged my (? phiz ?) will cold-cream before I went to bed.

16. Drew some Daffies to put in the letter to Harriet, which, I forgot to mention, I wrote yesterday. Took the letter down to Dr. C's office with me. Read the magazines there and came home with Muz at noon. Loafed at No. 3 most of P.M. but went to Dan's about 5 with my diary. Did not draw any in it but had quite a pleasant visit with D. who is really developing into quite a nice youth (which, translated, means that he is beginning to like me more). I was dressed as I was yesterday. Went for a short walk with Dan. Have not seen Donald for quite some time and I'm glad. Am going to avoid him as much as is possible and still be polite. He won't mind, I guess. Dan and I read till 10 and then he took me home. He gave me a lot more stamps which I have made into a border for a page in this book, as I did the others.

An ornament she mentioned wearing is her 'coral hand'. This is a pendent that is now in my possession. There is a hole going through it where it at one point held a riding crop.

After supper I went for a long walk with Dan. He was supposed to go to bed at 9, and we met his ma just as we came in at 10. Hope she does not hold it against me. I'm so darn sick of being held accountable for people's precious sons. I certainly shall try in future to get them to bed on time by force if necessary. Dan saw me home.

August 13, 1912 - Tuesday
We have tried not to edit anything out of the diary - up until this point. Marjorie was a product of her time, and thankfully things have changed a great deal in a hundred years. While she may have innocently written a word commonly used in her time, it is not an appropriate word to use today and we do not wish to condone it in any way.

12. Did not, of course, see Dan or Don at breakfast but saw Dan at lunch. Saw him again at 430. He showed me all the new illustrations in his diary and I did likewise. I wish Mr. Mahl would stop kidding Dan about me. It puts me in a queer position as it is absolutely unfounded. Went down to the Travellers' Ins. building. There was no one else on the floor so he showed me all around. I type-wrote while he finished his work. Did not stay there long but did not have Mahoneys till after ten. Saw Donald and Chandler green across the street as we were going home.

August 11, 1912 - Sunday
11. It was raining like sixty so we did not go in bathing. Perhaps it was just as well, for if we had we could not have packed our suits. It did not really clear up till about 11 A.M. I gave Chrissy's cage an extra fine cleaning, bathed him and gave him fresh seed and water. At 530 we bade a touching good-bye to everyone and mounted our prancing taxi. We reached our train 1/2 hr. before it started but we only occupied it as far as Saybrook Junction, where we met an auto (Poke Co.'s). Mr. C. met us at New London station and gave me a "Popular" to read. Had two ham sandwiches. The auto belonged to the Pope Co. for which Mr. C. works. We had a dandy ride, I holding Chris's cage out in my arms all the way so he would not be bumped too much. Landed at No. 3 about 9 P.M. Mr. C came up and he and Muz had clams and I had a soft-shell crab and a fish sandwich. I dropped asleep on the bed and so do not know what time the party dispersed but I remember feeling Muz brush my hair and I woke up just enough to undress and creep into bed.
Pope Co. may have referred to the Pope Manufacturing Company.
The "Popular" may have referred to the Popular Magazine. Below is an cover from late August / early September of 1912. More covers and information can be found at http://www.philsp.com/mags/popular.html.

10. Wi. I. B. and did some fine diving if I do say it as hadn't outer. Jumped off the lower pier once. Couldn't induce Mrs. Wilcox to swim to float but may to-morrow. Went for a walk with Olive and her baby sister. As a result the Valley of the Lost (as Don calls it) contains a box of Qu-zus and 1 lolly-pop. Helped Muz pack. My hair is still wet from this morning's bath.

9. W. I. B. - Practiced diving some more. In the evening I went down to see the yachts in the bay. All we could see of them was their lights of which there were hundreds. It was very pretty but I sure was tired afterwards!

August 8, 1912 - Thursday
8. W. I. B. Only swam to the float twice but got up courage enough to jump off the raft and even to dive!!!!! It felt awful at first, the water rushed up my nose and into my ears (I had sense enough to keep my mouth shut) and I was completely rattled but I managed to paw my way to the top. Left the water at 235 and just got dressed in time for dinner. Mrs. Creegan has so many boarders that some have to wait until the rest finish. Consequentlimentaly all arrive promptly as one. I go in barefoot now.
We are not going back to H. till Sunday and the music and - dance - hall over the way is playing "Skeleton Rag" also Muz is out, so I'm homesick! But I'll draw Daffydills and thusly overcome it.
I am stumped by what word Marjorie was trying to write here - perhaps just 'consequently' and the word got away from her?
Information about the Skeleton Rag can be found here while a recording from 1912 can be found at the Library of Congress' Jukebox.

7. W. I. B. Swam to raft four times and – Muz swam
three!!! Tried to get up my nerve enough to jump off but couldn’t. Went
for a walk in the evening with Mrs Purse and Mrs. G., also Muz. Met Mrs. Fowler
and her dog, Mutlie on the board-walk.

6. Went crabbing again. Caught exactly 25 but met no kind fisherman to take them off my hands so gave them to a man who was glad enough tot pay just $.00 each for them but no more. I wish I had thrown the poor things back instead. W. I. B. (see P. 52) read nearly all P. M. while Muzzy went for a walk. Got a letter from Donald in answer to my postal which he got after all. I tore up the letter as I am not going to paste any more of Don’t sin here and I hate to have old letters lying around loose. Saved some lettuce from supper for Chrissy-boy. He fully appreciated it. Muz and I went for a walk with Mrs. Griffeth.
Page 52 of the diary is the entry for August 5, 1912.

August 5, 1912 - Monday
5. W.I.B. (Hereafter these mystic letters will signify “went
in bathing”) but first after donning my bathing-suit, I took a net I had made
and Muz’s canvas bag and waded up the creek on the look-out for crabs. Caught
about ten, and one huge clam. As I reached the beach I met a man in a boat who
asked me if I had any crabs and, on learning I had, bought them for $.015 each.
I sure was thankful for even that small addition to my cash. I promptly blew it
in on pop-corn and chewing-gum, and Muz & I had a “near picnic” on the
island. Brought my net to the “n.-p.” but only caught 3 baby cras, too small to
keep so let them go. Am really a little lonely for Hartford. Mr. G. says “only
two places begin with H. and Hartford’s one.” Muz went ot New London this
evening & I went for a walk with Mrs. G. on the board-walk.

4. Mrs. Gorffith’s husband came down and went in swimming
with us. He is a classy “swimmist”. He swam to the raft five times, I – four,
and Muz twice. Mrs. G. cannot swim yet but is learning. In the P.M. Mrs. G.,
Muz, and I walked down to where the yacht is (belongs to Col. Payne) of which
Mr. G. is captain. Mr. G. came ashore in a peachy little launch containing a
very classy blonde sailor (No, Gentle Reader, my susceptible heart beatl beateth not with the beat of the
lovelorn)

3. Went in. Muz did not, as she and Mr. C. were going up the
creek in a row-boat to catch crabs. I swam to the raft twice. Did not see
either Pris or Marion. The water was cool and there was a stiff breeze blowing.
Forded the creek and crossed the island but did not see Muz and Mr. C. Went in
again after dinner but only to cross the creek with Muz. We carried yum-yums (a
kind of ginger-snap), peanuts and ginger-ale to the island in Chris’s canvas
sack. We looked like the Pilgrim fathers fording streams with our house-hold
effects on our backs. We had to carry across a well-stuffed sack, a sweater and
a rain-coat. Muz went home early as she was cold but I stayed a little longer
to hunt crabs. I don’t use them when I do find them as the little ones squirm
and the big ones pinch but it is fun to hunt them. Picked up some pretty shells
and one lone, lorn baby crab. Let the B.C. go but kept the shells to glue in
this book. Mrs. Corbly caught me scuttling upstairs in my wet bathing-suit
(We’d forgotten to leave any-thing down-stairs for me to put on) and she looked
sour to say the least. But she was quite decent about it, did not say anything
but that look!!!!! I won’t do it again, please ma’m.

August 2, 1912 - Friday
2. Went in bathing and swam to + from the float or raft
twice and from the end of the pier twice. Met two very nice girls named
Priscilla and Marion. I don’t remember either of their last names. They are
slick swimmers. Stayed with them in the water till 1230. Went
with Olive (whose last name, by the way, is Covbly, not Cobby), Grace and
Katherine to the dance hall. It is a very nice place and no objectionable
people go there. Muz and some ladies from the house came later. I danced nearly
all the dances with Muz. Somehow the music made me remember my grad. Dance and
the fun I had at it and I almost cried. I was so homesick for Hartford. It’s
funny how the memory of good times always makes you feel blue, but it’s so!!
Oh! I forgot. I answered Dan’s letter and I’ve just been thinking I might have
been rather too hasty in my remarks about Don’s postal from me. Come to think
of it I left a space in the address until I could find the name of the place he
worked, to which I intended to send the card; buy you know the saying in regard
to the “best-laid plans of mice and men” Muz found it and addressed it to
“Asylum Ave. – Near Sigourney St.” and it may not have reached him.

1. Went in swimming in morning. Loafed and read nearly all PM. Miss Murray was in bathing with us and I held her chin up while she tried to swim. She got along beautifully till I thought I’d see if she could swim without help. I accordingly let go of her chin, and this is what happened-:

Had a peachy time, take it all together, to-day.

30 Went in bathing and swam out to the raft. Also sat on the post to which the ropes that hold the raft are tied. Mr. Culver was there. He swam out too but Muzzy wouldn't. Went up to the island and swam near there. Muzzy swam some too. Learned to float. Went to the island again in the afternoon but a little boy had to row us over as we had no bathing suits on. Muz was wearing her blue dress & I my pink. But when we wanted to get back - although only about 43 ft of water separated us from the mainland - we had to walk around to the bridge and nearly 4 miles across country to get home. We reached it at 6:15. I was ravenous and ate a good supper. Muz is so sunburned that she can hardly touch her neck and arms. I am rather burned.

July 29, 1912 - Monday
29 Got good night's sleep and then started down to the shore. We had not been there long before it began to rain. Sent postals to Harriet, Dan and Don. Cut Chris's toe-nails, a job which took about an hour but was, I flatter myself, thoroughly done. It cleared up later and we went in bathing. I caught some small but (as I soon found out) bitey crabs. It began to rain again while we were in so we ran home. I got dressed and then went out and got some peanuts and graham crackers for Muz and myself. There are no classy youths around here as far as I can see.
